BACKSTORY

Pre-outbreak

𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 ; Born under her DEADNAME (not revealing it.) was born July 20th, 1989, to Joel in Austin , Texas along with her twin sister : Sarah. Who was only a few minutes older than her .Abandoned by her mother for unknown reasons ; she was raised by her father for most of her life . She also grew up with her uncle Tommy . Who she had a close connection to due to their shared interest in music .Despite her & Sarah being twins ; they couldn’t be more different . Tara wasn’t the sports type . Infact ; she despised it . She was more into arts & crafts . Anything that would keep her inside & her hands busy. Her pictures would often get hung up on the fridge.She was a quiet kid who often kept to herself . She never had that much confidence in herself: unlike her sister . Most of the time she’d lean on Sarah for support .& before the outbreak started . She even began to open up about not feeling the most comfortable in her own body; showing the first signs of gender dysmorphia .

The outbreak

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 the outbreak hit ; Tara was asleep in bed . Being too tired to wait up for Joel to come back home . It was Sarah who woke her up affer explosions were heard outside from helicopters . She didn’t want to go & explore it . But her sister insisted . So she followed behind her ; too afraid to be left alone .They went outside to see Mercy ; the neighbours dog around outside . Once again; Tara told Sarah to leave it . But once again; Sarah didnt listen and tried to free the dog; only for it to run away.Sarah insisted on going in to check on their neighbour . But due to her own fear ; Tara didn’t go . Instead opting to stay outside to wait for their dad & Uncle .Unintentionally leaving her sister to deal with the danger alone; She didn't even realise it until Sarah was out of the house & Joel killed their infected neighbour .She got a small lecture from Joel, who growled her for not going in with her sister in the first place to help protect her; something that she'll mentalize later in life.After finding out that an outbreak was happening all over America; they got in the truck & planned to get to safety in Mexico. However, Sarah surmised the infection was actually all over the world.They drove past Jimmy's farmhouse on fire and a stranded family on the side of the road. Despite Sarah's pleas, her father insists Tommy drive past the family. With Tara agreeing with him; letting her own fear consume her.Coming up to a gridlocked highway, they drove into the field to cut across the highway. Blockaded by the military, they drove into town where citizens were running from the infected.A passenger plane stalled and fell out of the sky, causing it to crash in the streets and hit the truck, tipping it over.Tara was seperated from her father, instead stuck with Tommy. She stuck with her uncle; agreeing to follow whatever her uncle said until they would meet back up around the block in the field.Tara & Tommy arrived just in time to save Joel.. & to watch her sister die in her fathers arm, Tara didn't try and comfort him or anything. not because she didn't care; she did care.But she was in shock, she lost half of her herself that day.And she lost her father too.

Ciao Papa

After the death of her sister; nothing was ever the same . She never got to see her father again; not emotionally . He was closed off from her. Keeping her alive physically but .. emotionally? he wasn't there. He was lost in his own grief & anger .Overtime; she learnt to stop calling him 'dad' in the first place due to how much pain it would cause him.But where Joel wasn't there for her; Tommy was. she got along better with him.She often talked about her feelings to him ; mostly about her dad . How angry she was at him ; but also how guilty she felt about being angry about him.As she grew into her teen-years ; her dysmorphia only got worse as hormones kicked in. She hated herself more & more . She couldn’t stand to look at herself in any mirrors or anything.Not until she began to grow her hair out a bit . Even if it made her look a bit like Sarah; it made her reflection somewhat bearable to see .But of course ; seeing her look more like Sarah .. if she ever got the chance to grow up made it harder for Joel to look at her ; not without getting back traumatic memories .She thought she could deal with it ; but in the end . She found herself in more despair then before . Even if it was unintentional ; Joel taught her at that age that she couldn’t rely on him anymore ; that she couldn’t trust him.So she grew apart from her father & relied more on her uncle to help her through the tough times .. even if his advice wasn’t always the best .At seventeen ; she finally decided to come out . She told her uncle about wanting to fully transition into a woman. She got support from him; but when it came to Joel. She got him to help her .Of course ; Joel was.. supportive as well. Just in his own way. He helped her choose her new name : ‘Tara’ .That one was one of the only positive moments she got to have with Joel.By nineteen , she got tired of living with him . She got tired of just surviving & nothing else . She saw pain all around her ; pain that she wants to help ease.So she ran away from home with Tommy ; knowing Joel would never let her . She ran away without his knowledge . She didn’t even say goodbye ; thinking he wouldn’t care .

Fireflies

When with the fireflies ; Tara was trained to be a medic by some of the other firefly medics ; after making it clear that she wanted nothing to do with violence & or guns . She found that being a doctor / nurse was her calling .It always made her feel better about herself knowing that she was helping other people ; rather then hurting other people . While she didn’t see much of her uncle Tommy ; she didn’t mind . She finally felt confident & comfortable about herself .She made friends with the leader of the fireflies ; Marlene . Over the shared opinions & viewpoints . Marlene was the one that helped her with her transition as well, getting the other doctors to help her by creating testorone blockers & estrogen injections.But that didn’t mean that she was well-liked all - around . While she had some friends within the fireflies , she also had ‘enemies’ , bigots & transphobes within the fireflies always tried to bring her down . Or make her feel bad about herself .They often said that she was ‘treated specially’ or ‘better than everyone else’ .& while yes ; she had her uncle Tommy to stand up to them every now and then. She knew she had to take a stand for herself as well.She decided to prove them all wrong through her work , by living her best life . She moved up in the ranks fast ; & when she turned 25 ; she offically became a fully-trained on-field nurse ; saving lives left & rightBut while she got what she always wanted ; while she felt fulfilled . Unbeknownst to her ; her uncle didn’t .While she didn’t understand why he had to leave , she didn’t hold back. But she also didn’t go along with him either . Instead ; she said her goodbyes & thanked him for helping her get this far & wished him the best of luck for the future .& in return; she would be welcomed to join him & his wife if she had ever changed her mind . She’d always have a home with them.

The last of us one

While not a 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 character of the last of us; especially part one. Tara is a character; being one of the background nurses within the firefly base. Where she first meets Ellie. She's in disbelief over the fact that they finally have a cure; that they can finally stop all of the pain.That maybe; just maybe, all of the pain & suffering can end.Tara is one of the people that helps put her down & into anesthesia . While yes, she feels conflicted that they have to take away an innocent life.. she's also aware that this could help millions of people and finally put an end to all of the infections. & maybe put an end to battle between the fireflies & FEDRA.Before putting Ellie under; Tara tells her one last fun story, one last happy story. one about her & her sister to put her at ease & give her one last happy thought so she wouldn't be scared.She stepped out of the room after that, not wanting to see her die out on the hospital table. But just as the procedure is about to go down, gunshots are heard.and just like that; she saw her own father. after 13 whole years. He was there; but he wasn't there for her. No, of course he wasn't. he was there for Ellie.She tried to tell him to stop; that this was the only way to help cure the world, to put end to all violence. But he didn't listen to her, again.He spared her and told her to leave now, saying that he didn't want to hurt her. so she did.she didn't see the violence but she heard it. He killed all of her friends; & in the end she was left with nothing.she was left all alone. again.

The last of us two

During the last of us: part two.Tara is once again; 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 . her story is optional . but it doesn't mean it's not important. Tara is more of a support character, relating to Ellies anger towards Joel. She is a person that she can feel safe around & openly talk about her feelings with.By last of us two; Tara has grown from a on-field medic to a doctor within Jackson, often treating people with injuries, checking for infections and any other health related issues. while she doesn't find it as fulfilling as her job as an on-field medic. she still finds joy in helping people.She lives all the way on the other side of town from her father, trying to get away as far as she can. After the events in her childhood & the events of the last of us one; she has a grudge against him. while not outwardly mean/hurt like ellie. she suffers silently. over coming across as passive-agressive.Until she hears about his death.
and sees his body for herself, after having to reassure Ellie that there's nothing that she can do, that she can't bring him back. she takes on the responsibility of burying him; even saying that she doesn't have to be there if it's too hard.It's optional to see. She doesn't want ellie to see.
But while Tara is alone with Joels body, she breaks down completely. crying and shouting at him; finally letting him know how he's made her feel her whole life. Asking why he couldn't love her like she loves Ellie & Sarah. But of course; she got no reply, no reassure about how he did love her. She didn't get that, instead all she got was silence.She promised his dead body that she'd take care of Ellie for him now that he's gone. & that she wouldn't let him down again. not like she did with sarah.After burying Joels body with Tommy's help, she lets Tommy know that she was going to watch over Ellie during her travels.And while she doesn't join the main group, she trails behind them. watching their backs at all times, even leaving out clues on where to go & leaving out medical supplies out on the road for them.She doesn't make herself noticed, not until she takes a bullet for Ellie Taking it right in the torso, piercing her kidney. She's able to save her & Dina. But unable to save Jesse, coming in just a bit too late.While wounded, she says that she's fine. and helps the both of them find their way back.But she's unable to complete the journey, she was dying slowly. Not wanting to traumatise Ellie anymore then she already was. She lied to her; saying that she was going to go back to Jackson to get help. And not to worry about her. She makes Dina promise to take care of her somewhere safe.Once out of sight, Tara finds a nice bed of snow & flowers to rest on. She knew she wouldn't be able to make it back to Jackson in time, so she gives up instead & dies slowly but peacefully.

Joel Miller - Biological Father

Tara's relationship with her father is.. complicated; on one hand, she understands him. he just lost his daughter. But on the other hand, she's angry & hurt by him. He wasn't there for her growing up; she hates him . because she had to see him drown in his sorrow & depression after sarahs death.& this hatred & hurt only grew bigger once she met Ellie. because it proved to her that he could've shown her that love, he could've shown her the support that she's always wanted. But he never did.But in the end, despite all of her feelings towards him, despite the hurt she feels. she still loves him BECAUSE he's her dad.

Unknown biological mother

Abandoned by her mother from birth; Tara grew up without a mother figure. Tara has almost no feelings on the matter, she tried to forget about her a long, long time ago. She doesn't know her story & she doesn't want to know her story either. It would be quite a road to reconnection if she ever met her.

Sarah miller-biological twin-sister

Tara really looked up to her sister when she was alive; they used to get along like two-peas in a pod. she always wanted to be as brave & confident as she was. Sarah was her first ever best friend; the only person who understood her. After she lost her; she lost a part of herself as well. Sarah inspired her to become a nurse & later a doctor . to help people; just as she would've if she was still alive.

Tommy Miller-Uncle

Tara's relationship with her uncle is one of the more positive ones; ever since she was a kid, she was able to relate & bond with him through music & art. after sarahs death, he was the only one she could really lean on for emotional support. she trusts him & knows she can lean on him if she ever needed help.

Maria Miller- Aunty

One of the newer additions to the Millers, Tara only knew Maria for a short time while her & her uncle were both in the fireflies. Tara has a respect for her, she also doesn't really know her too well. but she's family now; so of course she cares about her.If she got to know her more, they'd probaly be pretty good friends.

Ellie Williams - Adopted Sister

The newest addition to her family; Tara never expected to get a second chance to be a sister. she never misses an opportunity to be there for her if they need her to be. Tara is admittedly new to being an older sister But she tries her harder. she sees a lot of herself in Ellie. Her anger, her hurt.. but she often sees sarahs playfulness in her.Tara does have some jealousy towards Ellie but thats only when it comes to Joel. she never blames Ellie for it and she never lets that affect the sisterly bond that they do have.After Joels death, Tara promises to take care of Ellie as best as she can. and she does; till her death

Sahira is one of Tara's newer friends, while she's still getting around to know her; she's rather fond of her. enjoying her more playful nature that tends to help ease Tara's more worrisome & stressed nature.Despite Tara always being busy with either work or taking care of ellie. she always tries to make time for her.
